Background
Kelly is ranked WBO #2 and knows that victory over Corzo will put him within touching distance of a shot at undisputed champion Jermell Charlo.
But the unbeaten Corzo, who sits at No.9 in the standings, has global ambitions of his own and intends on ripping up the script to leave Kelly’s world title dream in tatters.
The 28-year-old Argentine Gabriel Alberto Corzo is known as ‘El Terrible’ and he is unbeaten in 18 bouts and a two weight champion having won WBA Fedebol welterweight and WBO Latino super-welterweight titles in his career.
But Briton Kelly is a former Commonwealth champion and reigning British beltholder, which is the title every young boxer in the country dreams of winning. He fell short when challenging for the European title against former world champ David Avanesyan, but he has rebuilt in impressive fashion to win three solid victories in a row resulting in a stoppage and two titles.
Quotes
Josh Kelly: “A win over Corzo on June 24 in Newcastle will put me within touching distance of a shot at the world title.
“I'm thrilled to be teaming up with DAZN and fully intend on producing a stellar performance that will be seen around the world on their platform.
“Corzo is ranked No.9 in the world and is a good fighter, but I am going to deliver a display that makes the rest of the division sit up and take note. You don't want to miss this one."
Gabriel Corzo: “Make no mistake, on June 24 in Newcastle, Josh Kelly’s world title dream ends and mine gets closer to being a reality.
“I am not travelling all the way from Argentina to make up the numbers. I want my shot at the world title and Kelly is standing in my way of that, so he must be moved aside.
“I hope Kelly’s fans are prepared for the upset that is coming.”
Predictions
Tim Rickson BBN Editor: “Corzo is an unbeaten WBO Latino champion, but he hasn't fought anyone on Kelly’s level. Kelly’s last two opponents - Troy Williamson and Lucas Bastida - were both tougher tests. He is a neat, tidy boxer with decent feet, nice movement and good fundamentals, but he carries no power and looks slow at times, missing lots of shots. I can see Kelly really outclassing Corzo and then swarming him to force the stoppage after a few rounds of breaking him down. I haven't seen a much of Corzo, so I could be underestimating him, but I pick Kelly to win by TKO in the mid-rounds 5-8.”
